Altar Servers
Altar Servers have the privilege of assisting the priest in the sanctuary during school Masses and other liturgical functions such as Adoration. They have a very important role in the liturgy. Altar Servers follow the example of Jesus, who did not hesitate to place himself at the whole of humanity’s service.
Eligibility: Open to students in 4 – 8th grades.
Requirements: School Altar Servers must attend altar server training at St. Joseph Catholic Church. This training usually occurs at the beginning of the school year through the parish.
Frequency: Altar Servers are usually asked to serve at school Masses approximately once per month. They may also serve at the parish masses throughout the year.
Leadership Opportunities: One 8th grade student serves as the senior server at each school Mass. The senior server’s responsibilities include making sure that enough Altar Servers are present for each mass, carrying the crucifix at the beginning and end of each Mass, and assisting the celebrant with incense if it is used during Mass.
